Experience
Advanced Typography has been a rollercoaster of excitement, challenges, and valuable discoveries. This module had made me learned a lot and paying attention to details in typography, we needed to checked on seniors' work to get ideas and inspirations, especially on the second task. I guess my favourite task was the first exercise-type and play, but at the meantime, it was the most difficult one when it comes to finding an image for the exploration. It made me stressed out so much.. but the outcome was satisfying(not the best but I think its fine). For Task 2, I enjoyed writing down my own personality, making me discover more about myself. Though, I believe the outcome could've been better. The challenges of ideation, design creation, and digitization were indeed exhausting and stressful, yet the overall process remained strangely enjoyable, guess this is how Design works😅. The process of every task really took many attempts, fail attempts to come to the ending results. I am glad that I have learnt so much about Advanced Typography and had a new experiences, improvements compared to the first semester. There are times that I also felt like I am not satisfied with my works, but I truly believe that it is a process of learning, and I will keep learning and improving myself in the future.
Observations
Throughout the Advanced Typography module in my second semester, I’ve seen notable growth and faced ongoing challenges. I’ve improved significantly in handling the complexities of design creation and digitization, focusing on detailed aspects like stroke consistency and letterform balance to achieve more polished results. My approach to managing time and workflow has also evolved; while I used to overthink and delay assignments, I now balance ideation with execution more effectively. Although indecision still occasionally arises, I’ve become more confident in making and sticking to design choices. Additionally, my heightened awareness of typography in various contexts, such as branding and product design, has positively influenced my work. Despite moments of dissatisfaction, I view these as valuable learning experiences that deepen my understanding and commitment to continued growth in typography.
Findings
The Advanced Typography module has been a valuable experience in delving deeper into the complexities of type design. I’ve learned that attention to detail is crucial for achieving a polished and cohesive outcome. Seeking feedback from both lecturers and peers has proven essential for refining my work and enhancing its quality. Engaging in iterative design processes and being open to constructive criticism have greatly contributed to my improvement. It’s also important to balance ideation with execution, as excessive overthinking can hinder progress. Embracing the iterative nature of design and understanding that perfection is an evolving goal rather than an immediate achievement has been key. Overall, the module has reinforced that continuous learning and adaptation are integral to growth in typography.
