TASK 2: EXPERIENCE DESIGN PROJECT PROPOSAL

After submitting our first task on the AR ideas proposal, we had an online consultation with Mr Razif since physical class was cancelled. I personally preferred the first idea, (refer to feedback) it was also suggested since it would be more possible to create compared to the other ideas.

PROCESS

IDEATION

Therefore, I moved forward with the first idea and conducted research. My first step was to choose a brand and product to focus on. I specifically looked for cereals with mascots, believing that characters could enhance the storytelling of their snacks and add interactivity to my AR project.

Examples:

1. Koko Krunch (Koko Krunch, Nestlé)
Koko the Koala promotes a love for chocolate with a playful, mischievous personality, capturing the joy of chocolatey cereal since his introduction.

2.Cosmo the Bear (Honey Stars, Nestlé)
Cosmo, a space-traveling bear, launched Honey Stars as a celestial-themed cereal, symbolizing curiosity and the thrill of cosmic exploration.

3.Tony the Tiger (Frosted Flakes)
Tony started in 1952, competing with other mascots but winning hearts with his iconic “They’re grrreat!” catchphrase, evolving over time into a symbol of strength and energy.

4.Lucky the Leprechaun (Lucky Charms)
Since 1964, Lucky’s marshmallow charms have given him magical powers, which he uses to escape kids trying to swipe his Lucky Charms.

Then, an idea came to mind: why not try a less well-known product? Cereals are already popular and have plenty of ads and games (not all of them are very healthy too). So, I thought of oat milk! Oat milk is becoming more popular in Malaysia, driven by health awareness, interest in plant-based diets, and demand for lactose-free options. Many cafés now offer it as a creamy, dairy-free choice for lattes, and various brands have made it readily available in stores and online.

By focusing on one brand, I could create an interactive AR experience to engage customers, showcasing the benefits and versatility of oat milk. This experience could feature fun, informative elements—like a virtual mascot, recipes, or facts about oat milk’s health benefits—that users can explore through their phones. This could make the product more appealing, especially to younger, tech-savvy consumers who value both convenience and sustainability.

There are two oatmilk brands that I usually buy Oatside and OatbedientBoth brands are from Singapore and have gained popularity for their creamy texture and plant-based benefits. Oatside is known for its rich, smooth flavor, while Oatbedient stands out with its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly packaging. I could focus on one of these brands for the AR project, creating an immersive experience that highlights their unique qualities and appeals to health-conscious, environmentally-aware consumers.

PROPOSAL

While finding both design and concept were good, I ended up choosing Oatbedient just because there's a cute mascot. I think it may also be less difficult to animate, as I'm not familiar with animating. I started my proposal document by writing out the Introduction, Project Description, Problem Statement, Aims and Goals, Objectives, Strengths and Weaknesses.

Aims and Goals

  • Increase Brand Awareness
  • Educate Consumers
  • Create an Engaging Experience

Objectives

  • Design an Engaging AR Experience
  • Showcase Brand Values
  • Encourage Brand Interaction

Then, I research on the story, values and concept of the brand. There isn't a lot of information about it though. My main findings were from their own website and an article.

Since I'm not sure whether there are AR apps like this created in the market, I talked about how users notice the product currently and what actions they would likely take.

SKETCHES

I did a rough sketch of the mascot since I’ll have to animate later on. I also sketched some elements of the ingredients to place in my prototype.

While drawing the mascot, I realized that it doesn't have hand to greet users in the welcome screen. So I think I might make movements with the ears and do the animation. I'm thinking if its possible to take pictures/elements from the website.

‘Oatie’ is a name created since the original mascot does not have a name.

    REFLECTION

    Experience

Writing the proposal allowed me to dive deeply into Oatbedient’s brand, focusing on their unique selling points like clean labeling, low sugar content, and ingredient transparency. This research was crucial to ensure the AR project would align with their brand values and resonate with their audience. Envisioning the technical aspects of an interactive AR experience was both challenging and rewarding, as I had to balance immersion with ease of use, accessibility, and device compatibility.

The idea development alone took me days, making the whole process time-consuming, even though the final outcome might not appear complex. I found myself surprisingly engaged in the drawing and research stages, which was unusual for me as I generally dislike research. I'm happy with the direction of the project, but I'm concerned about completing the upcoming project, as I'm barely keeping up with the basics of this module. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish it successfully.

    Observation

Through this project, I noticed that creating an AR experience goes beyond just understanding brand values; it requires a deep dive into how those values can be effectively translated into an interactive digital format. Oatbedient’s emphasis on clean labeling, low sugar, and ingredient transparency made it clear that the AR content needed to feel authentic and informative. Additionally, I observed that designing for accessibility—such as balancing immersion with ease of use—is crucial, as users have different devices and levels of tech familiarity. This realization added a layer of complexity to my planning, as I aimed to make the AR experience both engaging and user-friendly.

    Findings

Working on this project highlighted the importance of aligning technical design with brand identity to create a cohesive and impactful AR experience. I found that consistency in reflecting Oatbedient’s values—such as clean labeling and transparency—was essential for the AR feature to resonate with the target audience. Additionally, balancing immersion with simplicity emerged as a critical factor, ensuring that the experience remained accessible across devices and appealing to a broad user base. Lastly, the project reinforced the need for thorough planning; even straightforward concepts required substantial time and detailed consideration to meet both creative and technical goals.
