PART 1: INFOGRAPHIC POSTER

After exploring media and learning about information design, we will now develop an infographic that visually represents a series of different processes instead of relying on text. Our main focus is to analyze the “delivery mechanisms” that influence the effectiveness of infographics. While content is important, the goal is to evaluate what makes an infographic presentation work or fail by considering key components such as visual hierarchy, typography, color, shape, and pattern.

For Part 1, we need to create an infographic poster worth 20% of the assessment. This involves selecting an infographic reference from the internet (with prior consultation), redesigning it into an A4 format, and sketching the idea and process. The redesign should enhance visual hierarchy, typography, and overall clarity by simplifying the use of color, shape, and pattern. Once completed, the final poster must be attached to the E-Portfolio with an explanation and reflective writing.

Chosen poster to be redesigned

The chosen image features a recipe for making Valentine's-themed cupcakes.

There are several issues with this image that can be further refined, redesigned, and improved. Here are some of the key problems identified:
  • Inconsistent typography – The typography could be more cohesive for better readability.
  • Inconsistent font size – The same group of information is presented in different font sizes, creating a lack of uniformity.
  • Messy information layout – The steps are scattered without clear labeling, making it difficult for viewers to determine where to start.
  • Poor text alignment – The alignment of text could be improved for better structure and clarity.
  • Excessive graphics – While the graphics are visually appealing and thematic, their placement appears cluttered, and some do not directly relate to the information presented.
  • Overall alignment

Ideation Sketch

I want to redesign the poster to be more well-organized and simple, ensuring a clear layout and easy-to-follow instructions. I have added slightly more information, but not too much, to maintain clarity without overwhelming the viewer. To visualize the digitalized version, I used graphics and text in Procreate. After exploring different variations, I decided to go with the final design, as it presents the steps in a cleaner and more structured way, even though the fourth version was more eye-catching.

Digitisation

To start, I browsed Pinterest for graphics of baking clipart and watercolor-style cupcakes to enhance the visual appeal of my design. Source: baking clipart

To begin the design process, I imported the Procreate image into Adobe Illustrator as a reference. This helped me establish the basic structure and positioning of elements on the poster, ensuring a smooth transition from the initial sketch to the digital design.

I chose a cursive typeface that I downloaded years ago called JosephSophia. I believe it fits the Valentine's theme and complements the poster well, especially since the letter 'i' features a heart shape, adding a subtle yet fitting detail to the design. As for the body text, I used Bembo Std as a san serif font, suitable for an elegant and readable look. Bembo Std provides a classic yet modern feel, ensuring the text remains clear and sophisticated without overshadowing the decorative cursive font. The combination of these two typefaces creates a balanced contrast, enhancing both readability and aesthetic appeal.

After completing the poster, I experimented with adding grain effects to enhance the visual texture. I applied the effect to the background and heart shapes in the second version and extended it to the entire poster in the third version to create a more cohesive and refined look.

Final Redesigned Infographic Poster

After comparing the three posters, I decided to go with the original one as it appeared clearer in terms of color. To be honest, I was quite indecisive about which one to choose.

I also later noticed that the heart on the right was slightly too far out, so I made minor adjustments to its placement.

PART 2: MINIMAL ANIMATED INFOGRAPHIC

In Part 2, we will transform the infographic poster into a minimal animated infographic, also worth 20%. The animation should be a seamless loop lasting between 15 to 30 seconds, maintaining clarity and effectiveness. The video should be in a 1080 x 1920 px vertical format and must be uploaded to a personal YouTube channel.

Specific Feedback (showed references)

  • select the valentines cupcake image for redesign
  • prefer neater arrangement, well organized, looks more proper, in order
  • unless include number
  • visual is okay, illustration is good
  • choose better typeface
  • target audience is women/young female so keep the colour
  • can add abit information
  • font size too big, can make smaller

General Feedback

  • only need minimal animation effects
  • keep it simple

REFLECTION

Experience

For this project, we were tasked with selecting an infographic poster that needed improvement and redesigning it using better visual hierarchy, typography, and layout principles. I chose a Valentine’s Cupcake Recipe poster, which originally lacked clear organization and engaging visuals. The goal was to make the information easier to follow while enhancing its visual appeal.

During the redesign process, I focused on simplifying the steps without losing important details. I incorporated icons and step-by-step instructions to improve readability and make the recipe more engaging. Additionally, I structured the ingredients and instructions separately to ensure a logical flow. Instead of just listing information, I also refined the typography, colors, and layout to create a more cohesive and visually appealing design.

After finalizing the redesign, I animated the poster to create a minimal looping infographic. The animation added subtle movements to elements like icons, text transitions, and baking-related visuals to make the process more dynamic and engaging. One of the challenges was ensuring that the animation remained smooth and not overly distracting while still guiding the viewer’s attention effectively.

This project helped me understand the importance of structuring information effectively in infographic design and how animation can enhance engagement. I learned how color, shape, typography, and movement influence readability and user experience. If I were to improve the design further, I would experiment with different transitions and interactive elements to make the infographic even more immersive.
