CHOSEN ARTWORK

Fig T2.1 Sea The Future, 2019 by Andreas Häggkvist, Week 3 (21/02/2024)
UNSDG Goal 14: Life Below Water

Tittle of art : Sea The Future
Artist : Andreas Häggkvist
Year : 2019
Medium : Digital Media (style: surrealism)
Size : 705 px x 564 px

PHASE1: OBSERVATION

The artwork is in portrait format. The sky has soft and muted tones of orange, pink and purple, blending gently. The sea is a calming blue, gradually getting darker towards the bottom. In the center focuses a group of brown sea lions resting on an iceberg/rock by the ocean, and seagulls fly in the distance against the sky. However, upon closer inspection, beneath the iceberg illustrates a plastic bag, combining with the iceberg shown at the surface of the sea. (81 words)

PHASE2: ANALYSIS

The artwork is asymmetrically balanced, with equal weight distribution but varying masses. The overall impression of balance is maintained, but the specific characteristics of the elements such as the iceberg, plastic, sea lions and seagulls, may not be identical. The principle of Ground & Figure from Gestalt Theory is applied; at first glance, we see the iceberg/rock, and upon closer inspection, the bottom reveals a layer of plastic, changes how the iceberg/rock's surface is seen. Contrast can be observed as above shows many elements at the surface of the sea yet beneath the ocean is empty(just one plastic). Bright and warm colours are used on the sky, while dark and cold colours are used for the sea. This contrast also reflects reality by incorporating elements of living animals and conceptually using plastic to represent the iceberg/rock. Unity is achieved through the combination of the iceberg/rock and plastic, creating a cohesive whole. The colors employed maintain harmony, as they are not highly contrasted or saturated. (168 words)

PHASE3: INTERPRETATION

Andreas Häggkvist, a Swedish artist who creates surreal animal art to evoke emotions in an effort to raise awareness about global warming, plastic pollution, and poaching affecting endangered animals. The title of 'Sea the Future' reflects the artist's concern about the future of our oceans. In his piece, the surface of the sea appears peaceful, but the incorporation of plastic elements represents pollution, highlighting a stark contrast that often goes unnoticed by humans as it occurs beneath the sea's surface. This juxtaposition serves as a powerful reminder of the environmental challenges our oceans face and the urgent need for awareness and action. Through the artwork, the artist effectively communicates the message of plastic pollution, urging viewers to reflect on its impact. (121 words) (total word count: 370words)

FURTHER READING/RESEARCH

Some of the Andreas Häggkvist's artwork which I find quite similar and interesting:

Fig T2.2 'A falling star', Week 3 (21/02/2024)              Fig T2.3 'IceBearg, Week 3 (21/02/2024)

Based on my observations of Andreas Häggkvist's artworks, he often places animals as the primary subjects, with the environment serving as the background, occasionally merging the two. In Figures T2.2 and T2.3, a polar bear and a group of penguins are depicted in the Arctic on ice. Besides that, 'IceBearg' is also one of his series which has had the strongest impact. It was reposted by Ideas Powered, an important EU initiative for making a change with creativity. I believe these artworks are intended to raise awareness about climate change, as they prominently feature ice.

FEEDBACK

WEEK 3

Specific Feedback

  • proceed with Task 2

WEEK 4

    Specific Feedback

    • able to understand the principles and met the requirements of the module brief
    • visual analysis was presented clearly
    • overall is good, just need minor changes:
    • phase1:observation- remove/don't include points that further describes about the mood of certain observations in the artwork (e.g. colours of ... represents calm mood, darker colour brings depth etc.)
    • only write about what you see
    • could add a "/rock" behind every 'iceberg' word
    • phase 2: analysis- for contrast, write the deeper meaning of the contrast of elements at phase3(already done so just remove the extra points at phase2)
    • can do further research on Andreas Häggkvist's artwork(write a short interpretation)
    • check out "Dada art movement"

    REFLECTION

    Experience

On this task, there wasn't much to do since I had already written the design principles and descriptions in the previous task. However, I observed more aspects in this task. I delved into greater detail and discussed the meaning behind the chosen artwork. I discovered that the artist was truly remarkable, creating pieces that raise awareness without being too uncomfortable to view. In fact, they were beautiful and easily accessible, yet they carried deeper meanings and reflected harsh realities. I believe this demonstrates how great artists create their work. Additionally, I found myself particularly drawn to surrealism art. I can't quite describe the feeling, but often, I would pause at certain images or artworks and reflect them further. Sometimes, they would even inspire me to imagine stories. After having a consultation with Dr.Jinchi, she introduced a term to me, which was the "Dada art movement", she said I might like to look up for it since I find surrealism interesting. From what I remember, she mentioned Dada means nothing and was chosen randomly from a dictionary! The term was emerged during World War I, Dada artists aimed to disrupt the art world by creating strange and meaningless pieces. They wanted to break the rules and make people question what art really meant. To be honest, I find small talks with our lecturer quite enjoyable, they add meaning and fun to the learning experience.
