Task 3- Digital Triptych - Exploring Scott McCloud's Transitions

WEEK 10/ TRANSITION

  • Having two frames could help audiences understand the story better compared to just having one frame.

Gestalt Law of Closure
  • object grouped together are seen as whole

Scott McLoud's Transition

In this week's lecture, Mr. Hafiz provided us with an overview of the impending digital triptych assignment, and explained more about the Scott McCloud's transitions to give us a clearer understanding. After that, he had also provided the lecture recording for us to watch in case we needed to refer back.

INSTRUCTIONS

TASKS

This assignment is a continuation of our previous assignment (Decisive Moment), we were assigned to comprise one before and one after a significant event in panels. Each panel will represent a different transition type from McCloud's theory. By the end, we ought to have three panels in total after including our previous artwork-the climactic turning point which mine was Hanako-san carrying a scary smile and shows her hands out, ready to pull the person who appears in front of her.

After deciding among the 6 Scott McLoud's Transition, I chose to go with Scene to Scene transition to present my final work.

DIGITALISATION

While digitizing my work on Adobe Illustrator, I decided to change a bit of the sketch to show the scenes more clearer.

PANEL 1(BEFORE): scene of the third floor's toilet. A girl student reaches the entrance of the third-floor bathroom, she was knocking at the door.

PANEL 2: Hanako-san materializes, her face adorned with a chilling smile, and her ghostly hands outstretched towards the girl.

PANEL 3(AFTER): the expression changes from confidence to sheer terror as she becomes entangled in the spectral grip of Hanako-san, the after scenes marks a pivotal turning point in the story, leaving a lasting impact on the narrative.

REFLECTION

Despite the fact that we had completed numerous lessons and practices, I still believed the current assignment would be challenging. Digital drawing is not something I am at ease with because it may get very complicated at times. In this assignment, I know that effective transitions are crucial to producing a visually appealing result because they allow viewers to infer the plot's developments without the need for a narrative. Prior to beginning the digitization process, it is also essential to plan and sketch out our thoughts. By doing so, we may have an initial overview of the final product and make necessary adjustments to the artwork.

Throughout our creative journey, I've occasionally come to the realization that we should always have confidence in ourselves, especially when we feel like we're not very good at anything. For myself, I struggle with confidence nearly all the time. Nevertheless, I ultimately succeed in finishing a lot of tasks that I felt were impossible. Even if perfection might not always be achieved, I think that learning and having fun during the process are essential to succeed in gaining experiences.
