BIOGRAPHY

Tell us about yourself :

My name is Emily Goh, born and raised in Petaling Jaya. I was born on 28th of September, under the sign of Libra. Being an ENFP, I frequently find myself intrigued by the small details of life and have a penchant for exploring novel experiences. I enjoy listening to music during my free time and have been drawing since I was a kid. Another fact about me is that I have a deep affection for the beach and the sunset, or, in other words, I find joy in the beauty of life.

What is your passion ?

I don't have any great passions for anything at the moment but for now, I'd say, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and exploration is my lifelong passion. I find solace and inspiration in the rhythmic waves and golden sunsets at the beach. There's a strong connection I find between the rhythm of the ocean waves and the ebb and flow of life's experiences. The beach, for me, is a sanctuary—a place where I escape from reality and reconnect with the simplicity of existence. In quiet moments by the shore, I reflect on personal growth and aspirations. Beyond sandy shores and horizons, it's a metaphor for embracing the transient beauty of each moment. My journey has taught me to appreciate life's unpredictable tides. The journey of life, much like a day at the beach, is filled with surprises, I've learned to savor each moment, finding beauty in simplicity.

What motivates you to achieve your dream ?

Embracing the philosophy of "live while we're young," I strongly believe in living in the moment is important. It's essential to invest time in trying new things and engaging in activities that bring us happiness and comfort. I prefer to go with the flow in life, recognizing that each step is laden with surprises. Therefore, I strive to remain curious and find joy in the simple pleasures of life. I believe one day I'll be able to discover something I truly enjoy doing.

How do you want to visualize your dream into an artwork ?

By capturing the essence of living in the moment,  I'd incorporate elements that symbolize curiosity and an appreciation for the simple pleasures of life, using colors and textures to evoke a lively and optimistic atmosphere. Ultimately, the artwork would aim to encapsulate the belief that, in this journey, I will discover something truly enjoyable and meaningful. I want to make my overall artwork to look calm, and at ease.

ARTWORK STATEMENT

Tell us about your work.

My artwork is a visual exploration of my lifelong passion for self-discovery and the profound connection I feel with the beach. Through a collage that features myself as the central figure, I aim to encapsulate the essence of living in the moment and finding solace in the rhythmic waves and golden sunsets.

What is the concept behind it?

The concept revolves around the metaphorical journey of life, using the beach as a symbolic sanctuary where I escape from reality and reconnect with the simplicity of existence. The poster incorporates elements that represent personal growth, exploration, and the appreciation of life's transient beauty.

What is the message you want to send?

Through this artwork, I aim to convey the importance of embracing the present moment and finding beauty in simplicity. The artwork urge viewers to go with the flow, remain curious, and find joy in life's simple pleasures. It reflects the belief that, in this journey, one can discover something truly enjoyable and meaningful.

What is your motto/quote?

"Glide in the golden light", representation of my passion for self-discovery and exploration at the beach. "Glide" implies a smooth and effortless movement, reflecting the ease with which I navigate through my journey of self-discovery. "golden light" represents the warm hues of sunsets, the moments of clarity. It hints at positivity, reflecting the joy I find in life's simple pleasures during explorations.

MOOD BOARD

Study and gather all related information about your topic.

Fig 1.1 Mood Board, Week 11 (10/12/2023)

In these three references chosen for my mood board have similarities in each other. The first poster's mix of warm and cool colors, like a cozy sunset by the ocean, brings a sense of togetherness. In the second one, the child takes center stage while tiny humans by the seaside spark imagination and add an interesting twist. For the third one, the depiction of waves conveys emotion, creating an atmosphere that resonates with contemplation and 'deep thoughts'.

DESIGN DIRECTION

SKETCHES

Before diving into my sketches, I browsed through Pixabay(website given by our lecturer) to find beach images. To create my final poster, I merged two sketches, utilizing the right-side background for its sunset-like hues. Additionally, incorporating waves adds a storytelling element to convey my intended message.

Fig 1.2 Sketches, Week 12 (13/12/2023)

In my final poster, I might want to include some elements that could represent my concept for my artwork:

1. sun- the transformative moments in self-discovery journey

2. flowers- growth

3. nature and ocean elements: shells/sand/waves

I would like to name my artwork as 'Golden Horizons', based on the phrase "Glide in the golden light" that will be used in my poster.

EXECUTION AND POST PRODUCTION

CHOSEN IMAGE:

Fig 1.3 chosen imageWeek 12 (13/12/2023)

The reason why I have chosen this image is because it captures the genuine joy and freedom in the moment. While choosing an image of myself, this picture stood out as I thought since I was holding flowers, it could add a natural touch, symbolizing growth and fleeting(precious moments). The flowers become a visual metaphor, enhancing my narrative of self-discovery and inviting viewers to appreciate life's simplicity.

PROCESS OF TITLE-FONT FROM TYPOGRAPHY:

In our third task of Typography module, we had digitalized and created our own fonts in few weeks time. Here are some process of my font-MellowScript, that will be used in this final project.

PROCESS FROM ILLUSTATION AND VISUAL NARRATIVE:

I decided to include some illustration of nature and ocean elements such as seashells and starfish to evoke the natural aspects of the beach and its surroundings. These elements also adds a fun touch to the more 'realistic' looking piece of artwork.

seashells: each seashell's uniqueness reminds us that each person is special, and no two lives are the same
starfish: resilience in the face of challenges

REFLECTION

Experience

This assignment has finally come to an end. Overall, I have learnt really much in this semester's modules: Typography, Digital Photography & Imaging, and Illustration & Narrative. And in this assignment, we combined all the things we've learnt and create an artwork. Well, for this final project, I find it interesting yet tiring to think of what's my passion since I really don't know about it. Therefore, I thought of what I like and somehow relate it with the journey of life. This made me worry less about not having anything interesting to write and to complete this project. The part where I struggled at first was using Adobe After Effects because the tutorial video was not available anymore, but I had tried my best to complete the animation.

Observations

Due to only learning how to use AI and PS, I realize I still need more practice on using Adobe After Effects. I find it complicated because the functions in the software looked less organised compared to the other two. In all modules, I would still say, I need to stop thinking too much before I start the tasks. This would help a lot in saving time to complete the tasks.

Findings

Sometimes, having no limitations could make us think even more, the idea developing in this project was quite difficult. Maybe this is one of the ways to train our brains, to apply creative and thinking skills.
